EastEnders icon Samantha Womack and Only Fools and Horses actor looks unrecognisable in 90s comedy show

The children's ITV show debuted 33 years ago, and featured some very famous faces!

Samantha Womack is famed for playing Roxy Mitchell in EastEnders between 2007 and 2016, but she once starred in a children’s sitcom alongside an array of famous faces including an Only Fools and Horses star.

Spatz was a sitcom set in a 1930s-themed fast food joint that aired on CITV between February 1990 and April 1992. The burger bar was located in a fictional shopping mall in Cricklewood, London, and saw many faces pass through its doors.

Samantha, 50, played the role of restaurant worker Toni in series one for two episodes. She was only 17 at the time and was kick-starting her acting career when she took on a short stint as one of her very first acting gigs.

While on Spatz, the EastEnders icon appeared alongside Vas Blackwood, who is known as Lennox Gilbey in Only Fools and Horses.

Blackwood, 60, played the role of armed robber Lennox, aka ‘The Shadow’, during The Longest Night episode of the BBC sitcom in September 1986, and five years later he landed the role of Dexter in Spatz for all 33 episodes of the show.

He’s also starred in a long list of TV shows and films including Essex Boys Retribution, Mean Machine, Casulaty, and famously Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels to name a few.

Most recently, Vas played Paul Ali Rahman in the 2023 film Hitmen.

Many other famous faces passed through the Spatz doors, including movie star Rhys Ifans and ex-footballer and pundit Gary Lineker. Batman star Paul Rothery also starred in the show as T.J. Strickland.

Taking to Facebook last month, fans of EastEnders and Only Fools realised both Womack and Blackwood had started in Spatz, with one person writing: “Just asked my wife if she remembers Spatz and look who was in it. The Sh-a-dow.”

Another stated: “A young Sam Womack (Ronnie Mitchell) from Spatz back in 1990”, as another added: “Omg! I used to love this…. And… Why am I only just realising that the shadow from only fools was in it!”
